This life plus is one month old today can you believe it?! As I’m writing this post I can’t believe how fast my first month has gone.
At the same time, I feel so comfortable with my blog now and with the community that I’ve built up on social media, it feels like it started 5 years or even 6 years ago!
I didn’t set out to make money blogging. In fact until January 2018 I honestly had no idea that blogging could generate anything more than a bit of pocket money.
Sounds crazy really, considering I like to think I know a bit about how to make money from home. But it’s true, I was absolutely, 100% in the dark on this one.
I thought I knew what to expect because I’ve read so much and learned a ton from the blogging course I am taking (more on that further down), but there were so many ups and downs and things that came up out of the blue. I have learnt more than you could even imagine!
How I made Three Figures My First Month Blogging
I wasn’t expecting to make money blogging as I said above, although I did try to put things in place that I have learnt about in order to make the site ready for when I could monetise it.
I was mentally prepared for it to take a lot of time and effort before I started seeing any income. I knew I needed traffic, and email subscribers first.
The first income that I made was an affiliate payment from Bluehost, a website hosting provider. The second and third were for social media coaching and consulting. I also made 1 cent from Google Adsense, woohoo lucky me!
Until I started reading income reports from people like Melyssa Griffin and Pat Flynn, whose names I didn’t even know until that point by the way, I had no idea that you could make money from a blog!
I’ve been working from home now for the last 10 years and I’ve tried a lot of side hustles. I’m somewhat of an expert when it comes to how to make money from home. It never occurred to me to try blogging because I thought that was something that people just did back in the 90s.
When I read those income reports by the bloggers who I now admire so much, I realised that blogging wasn’t only a viable way to make money, it could also be a fantastic creative outlet.
I knew I had to give it a go because I’ve been searching for something that I could not only make money from but would also allow me to be creative and let my imagination run wild.
I want to help people, I want to write, and I want to make money. Blogging seemed the ideal pursuit, so I went for it.
There are so many ways to make money blogging, as I found, so even if you have a very small blog and a very small social media following or none at all, don’t be discouraged. You might be pleasantly surprised like I was!
You might wonder why I would choose to do a blog income report in my very first month? Well, the reason is the income reports I read, and still read, have inspired me so much.
Without them, I would never have found out how to start a blog and how to make money blogging, and I wouldn’t be sitting here now writing a post about how I made thee figures my first month!
I know that many of you are struggling to do the same thing, or wondering how you can make money from home in a way that fits around your family, or your full-time job. I want to give you an idea of what it takes to actually make money from your blog, and let you know that it IS possible no matter what your situation.
If I can do it, I know you can sure as heck can do it too!
What did I achieve this month?
I launched the blog! Seriously, there is so much to do that just launching is a huge feat in itself. I am so proud that I was able to complete everything on my massive to-do list from the month before, and actually go ahead and make the blog live.
I set up WordPress, started a mailing list, made a bunch of freebies to go with some of the blog posts, wrote over 30,000 words, and worked on optimising all my social media profiles.
I made SO many mistakes! But I learned a ton of new information and am really excited to move forward now and see where blogging can take me.
And how exactly was I able to make money blogging?
Let’s dig in shall we.
Social media coaching and Consulting $200
TOTAL INCOME (before expenses) $265
WordPress theme $65
Board booster $5
Hosting $3.95 (prepaid annually)
TOTAL INCOME (after expenses): $147.60
So as you can see, the majority of this blog income came from social media coaching. I do find this really exciting, being able to help people with their business goals through utilising social media.
But long term I don’t want to have to rely on selling time for money. I would rather focus on ways to help MORE people at the same time, so I will be working hard to prepare for creating my own digital products and online services that can create residual passive income.
1. Have at least 25 posts up
I’m currently writing sporadically as and when the moment takes me, so I need to get far more targeted and focused on this. There are 10 half-written posts sitting in my drafts, that were started before I launched, so I will finish those and work on making them awesome.
I have shifted some things around and made it so that I don’t have to concentrate on anything else this month except for the blog and creating more content, so hopefully, I will be able to increase traffic and make this life plus grow quickly.
2. Create amazing freebies for my email subscribers
I already have a whole bunch of free downloadable goodies for most of my blog posts, now I want to have things that are specifically for the people who are on my mailing list as well.
Let me know if you have any suggestions of things you’d like me to create!
3. Grow Pinterest Traffic with Tailwind
I was focusing on Pinterest, Facebook, Facebook groups, Instagram, AND Twitter in March, so as you can see I was a little all over the place. In order to make money blogging in April and beyond, I want to concentrate almost entirely on Pinterest in order to grow my traffic.
It’s already my number one referrer thanks to Boardbooster and I know if I focus on it, I will grow much quicker than by spreading myself too thin over multiple social media platforms.
I am adding Tailwind to the mix because they have this amazing thing called tribes, where thousands of other people can share your content across their boards too.
4. Grow Facebook Group to 500 members
There are already 165 awesome girl-bosses in my Facebook group Online Fempreneurs right now. I love this group so much and I would love to see it grow. You can help me grow the group by joining here.
